The watch officer on the containership NCL Salten that ran aground and crashed into a garden near Trondheim, Norway on 22 May has admitted to falling asleep while on duty at the time of the incident.
As reported, investigators revealed that the officer voluntarily confessed to falling asleep while alone on watch and has since been charged with negligent navigation. Authorities are also examining whether the ship’s working and rest hour regulations were properly followed.
To remind, the vessel narrowly missed hitting a nearby house when it ran aground just meters away. Efforts to refloat the ship have so far been unsuccessful.
“The individual charged was the officer on watch at the time of the incident”, the prosecutor in Trøndelag Police District said in a press statement.
