Another person has died from injuries sustained in a recent fire at the Chevron-operated Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) oil platform offshore Angola, raising the total number of fatalities to three.
Two workers were initially transferred to specialist units at hospitals in South Africa, while the body of a third worker is yet to be retrieved from the ocean and identified, officials added, Reuters reports. The fire broke out on 20 May around 3 a.m. local time on Chevron’s deepwater oil platform, located about 60 miles off the coast of Cabinda, Angola.
The blaze originated on the basement deck of the multi-story platform, which serves as both a drilling and production facility and living quarters for roughly 157 personnel. Seventeen people were injured, four seriously.
At the time of the incident, the platform was shut down for scheduled annual maintenance.
