In late May, Latin America’s first electric tugboat set off from Tuzla, Turkey, en route to Puerto Montt, Chile, on a 45-day voyage. The fully electric tugboat, powered by lithium-ion batteries and renewable energy, delivers over 70 metric tons of bollard pull and provides zero-emission berthing and unberthing services. Once in Chile, the tug will continue to Puerto Chacabuco in the Aysén Region for a dry run period before officially entering service. The tug is being transported aboard the BBC Olympus, a vessel equipped with heavy-duty cranes designed for specialized cargo. This electric tug is the third in SAAM Towage’s global fleet but the first in Latin America, marking a major milestone in the region's move toward more sustainable maritime operations. Pablo Cáceres, SAAM Towage’s Sustainability and Development Manager, described the vessel as a key part of the company’s future-focused, eco-conscious strategy. Enap, the Chilean state-owned energy firm that will use the tug in Puerto Chacabuco, sees the vessel as part of a broader initiative to support environmental protection and decarbonization.
