Our special column focuses on resilience, a vital issue for shipping industry - and other industries as well - given that the human element lies at the heart of the safety culture. This time, we have asked global experts to provide feedback on how to successfully implement a resilient culture in the industry.

Capt. Yves Vandenborn, AFNI, Director of Loss Prevention at the Standard P&I Club, suggests focusing on resilience for the crew onboard rather than to competency only. This is the only way to understand the bigger picture and know how to respond to every situation.                           

One of the key focal areas that MPA will drive is the protection of Critical Information Infrastructures. As such, it will establish a 24/7 Maritime Cybersecurity Operation Centre, by the third quarter of this year, to further augment capabilities for early detection, monitoring, analysis and response to potential cyber attacks. 

In recent months large oil majors have been promoting the idea of developing more resilient safety cultures. Resilience is described as a company’s positive ability to adapt to the consequence of change, whether this change is initiated (caused) by market changes, innovation or even natural disasters.

We have all tried to adopt a resilient life routine once with no results. Though everyone has 24 hours in a day, some people seem to always get much more done. Thus, how do they do it?

Being resilient means remaining a thriving enterprise despite the emerging challenges. Which are the capabilities, skills, and self-care practices that contribute in building professional resilience in maritime industry?

A recent study conducted by Ponemon Institute and sponsored by IBM Resilient found that 77% of respondents do not have a formal cyber security incident response plan applied consistently across their organization, while nearly half of the 2800 respondents reported that their incident response plan is either informal/ad hoc or completely non-existent.

Graham Ahearne, Corvil Director, Security Product Management, said that the advanced, persistent threat landscape in cyber security poses an enormous risk to global financial markets and Cyber Resilience can be built through standards, collaboration and AI-Powered Automation in these markets.

The Human Rights At Sea campaign published a guide for shippers, addressing the issue of handling and remaining resilient after traumatic events at sea, such as marine incidents. The campaign aims to urge shippers to ask for professional help when they feel they need it, highlighting that this does not imply any instability or weakness.
