CLPe and Guangdong Water Transport Clean Energy Company Limited (CNOOC) successfully carried Hong Kong’s first-ever ship-to-ship (STS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation with simultaneous cargo handling (SIMOPS) on 5 June 2025.
The operation took place at Kwai Tsing Container Terminals and involved the refueling of the Hanoi Express, a container vessel owned by German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd. This event also marked the largest single LNG bunkering operation in Hong Kong to date, with approximately 10,000 cubic meters of LNG delivered.
The LNG was supplied using CNOOC’s Haiyang Shiyou 301, the world’s largest LNG bunkering and transport vessel with a 30,000 m³ capacity and a refueling rate of 1,650 m³ per hour. This vessel enabled efficient bunkering to be completed within 24 hours while the Hanoi Express concurrently loaded and unloaded cargo, significantly optimizing operational efficiency and reducing port turnaround time.
This milestone builds on a joint venture announced in November 2024 between CLPe and CNOOC to develop LNG bunkering services in Hong Kong.
