Ørsta-based shipping company Møre Sjø has placed an order for two zero-emission hydrogen-fueled bulk carriers.

The ships will be powered by green hydrogen supplied by GreenH, and are expected to be operational by early 2027. According to Møre Sjø’s Torstein Holsvik, the decision came after a comprehensive evaluation of technologies, fuel availability, and long-term costs. “After thorough assessments of technology, costs, and future access to fuel, the choice fell on hydrogen. For us, this is the most forward-looking choice,” Holsvik stated.

Each vessel will measure 85 meters in length and weigh 4,000 tons. They are being designed by Naval Dynamics AS, with e-Cap Marine responsible for system integration.

We are proud to collaborate with Møre Sjø on what will be the first hydrogen bulk carriers of their kind. These ships will bunker at several of GreenH’s upcoming facilities, supporting the build-out of critical hydrogen production and maritime infrastructure,

… said GreenH CEO, Morten Solberg Watle

The hydrogen fuel will be sourced from GreenH’s planned production hubs across Norway, including Hammerfest, Bodø, Sandnessjøen, Kristiansund, Rogaland, and Tønsberg.

With CO₂ taxes rising on fossil fuels, hydrogen offers a more predictable, eco-friendly future. Others may choose differently, but for us, compressed hydrogen is the clear path forward,

… Holsvik concluded.
