Türkiye has announced an increase in the transit fee for ships passing through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits by 15%, raising the rate to $5.83 per net ton, starting July 1, 2025.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, with the upcoming increase marking the fourth revision since the new policy was introduced. The most recent adjustment occurred in July 2024, when the fee rose by 14.7% to $5.07 per ton. Prior to that, it was $4.08 in 2022-2023 and $4.42 in 2023-2024.
From 1983 until 2022, the transit fee remained unchanged at $0.80 per net ton. However, following a presidential decree in 2022, the tariff has been subject to annual adjustments, with updates scheduled for July 1 each year.
Reportedly, in 2024, a total of 51,058 ships transited the straits without stopping, generating $227.4 million in fees.
This increase is quite valuable in terms of supporting the sustainability of the public services we provide in the Turkish straits. With the help of these fees, we continue to constantly develop the necessary infrastructure and vessel traffic monitoring systems to improve environmental safety and ensure maritime safety in the straits.
